The first step to working in a laser dental practice is holding a laser use licence. To apply, you must complete a recognised face-to-face pre-licensing course.
This certified program is officially registered with Radiation Health departments in Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. It meets the training requirements for laser use and for staff who assist or support during laser procedures, in line with AS/NZS 4173:2018.
Delivered by Dr Lan Tran BDS (General Dentist), this course gives dental professionals a clear foundation in laser science and safety across all laser types, not just Waterlase. You will learn how laser energy is generated, how it interacts with tissue, and how to use lasers safely in daily clinical work.
The program also covers real clinical applications in hard and soft tissue procedures, with a strong focus on safety, predictable results and practical integration into dentistry.
While licensing is only mandated in QLD, WA and TAS, this training builds the knowledge needed to work safely, choose correct settings for surgical outcomes, and earn 8 CPD credits toward your annual requirement.
What You’ll Learn
- How laser energy is produced
- How lasers interact with human tissue
- Safety risks and hazard management
- Engineering and administrative safety controls
- Hands-on use in common surgical procedures
Licensing Exam
Participants seeking a laser licence can sit an exam during the course. The assessment is designed to meet state radiation health requirements and may support licence applications where applicable.
