This intensive, fully hands-on course takes participants through the complete digital workflow, from intraoral scanning and restoration design to printing, milling, post-processing and final finishing.

This is not a day of lectures or watching someone else work. Every participant will scan, design, manufacture and finish restorations and appliances using the same equipment and processes found in a modern dental clinic or laboratory.

Throughout the day, you will work with:

  • Aoralscan intraoral scanners
  • UPCAD dental design software
  • SHINING 3D dental printers
  • UP3D wet and dry milling machines
  • Dental printing, milling and finishing materials

You will complete the full scan → design → manufacture → finish workflow for:

  • A crown
  • A veneer
  • A splint

The practical finishing sessions will cover:

  • Staining and finishing a printed full-arch AOX restoration
  • Staining, glazing and finishing printed crowns
  • Crystallising, staining and glazing lithium disilicate crowns
  • Sintering, staining and glazing zirconia crowns
  • Staining and finishing printed veneers

working in groups of two, you will learn how to prepare files correctly, select the appropriate manufacturing method, set up print builds, prepare milling jobs, choose suitable materials and complete the required post-processing procedures.

The course will also cover the small but important details that determine whether an in-house workflow becomes productive or frustrating, including:

  • Scan strategy and accurate data capture
  • Design preparation in UPCAD
  • Print orientation and support strategy
  • CAM preparation and milling considerations
  • Cleaning and post-curing printed restorations
  • Zirconia sintering
  • Lithium disilicate crystallisation
  • Staining, glazing, polishing and final finishing
  • Daily equipment care and workflow organisation
  • Common causes of poor fit, failed prints and unsuccessful milling jobs
  • Practical troubleshooting and quality-control checks

We will finish the day with a focused best-practice and troubleshooting session, covering the most common problems encountered during scanning, design, printing, milling, finishing, and how to identify the actual cause before wasting further time or materials.

By the end of the course, you will have personally completed the core stages of an in-house digital manufacturing workflow. You will leave with practical experience, repeatable processes and a clearer understanding of how to produce consistent restorations and appliances in your own clinic or laboratory.

Participants receive 10 CPD/CE credits.

Our speaker

Stuart is a registered practitioner known for a clear, analytical approach to problem solving. He focuses on practical solutions that work in real clinical and laboratory environments rather than theoretical workflows.

He works closely with Shining 3D as a product and software development ambassador and collaborates with the R&D team at MEYER Optoelectronic Corp, providing feedback from real-world use through engineering meetings, factory visits and system testing.

His skills span advanced manufacturing and CAD using Autodesk AutoCAD and Fusion, including additive manufacturing, CNC plasma and fibre-laser cutting, TIG and laser welding, and rapid iterative design through in-house 3D printing. This allows concepts to move quickly from idea to prototype and into production workflows.

Stuart has contributed to the development of core modules including the Aoralscan Elite IPG workflow, CreSplint, Cloud DesignCentre, iDentalLab and DentalJMS production systems. He also supported one of Australia’s earliest adoptions of additive manufacturing for chrome frameworks, helping establish reliable digital production workflows.

Beyond dentistry, he designs embedded automation systems using C on system-on-chip platforms to streamline equipment and manufacturing processes, reducing reliance on traditional PLC systems and allowing faster iteration and software updates.

His troubleshooting approach follows a simple engineering principle: stabilise the system, identify the root cause, then communicate the fix clearly. Investigations are reset to first principles to remove confirmation bias and isolate variables so faults are diagnosed from evidence rather than assumption.

Having worked extensively with production-scale outsourcing laboratories, Stuart focuses strongly on quality control, consistency and process simplification. His workspace and workflows are organised in strict production order to reduce wasted time, improve safety and maintain reliable output at scale.
